North Carolina Medicaid clinics: certification grace period

An NC Medicaid bulletin dated 2026-08-31 says that existing and new paraprofessionals providing research-based behavioral health treatment (RB-BHT) must hold at least one qualifying certification for their services to Medicaid beneficiaries to be reimbursed. The RBT® behavior technician credential is one of them; the Applied Behavior Analysis Technician (ABAT) certification from QABA is the other.

For existing paraprofessionals without a qualifying certification, the bulletin states: "the 120-day grace period starts on Aug. 1, 2026." The bulletin does not print a calendar end date. Counting 120 days from 2026-08-01, we compute about 29 November 2026 (28 November if 1 August is counted as day 1). That date is our own calculation, not the bulletin's wording.

We found no extension in the bulletin or in web searches on 2026-10-29 and 2026-10-31. Not finding one does not prove none exists, so read the current bulletin yourself.

Official source (retrieved 2026-10-29): NC Medicaid, "Updated Reminder: Requirements for Research-Based Behavioral Health Treatment Service Delivery", 2026-08-31.

This is information, not legal or billing advice. The practice exams prepare candidates for the behavior technician exam only and do not certify anyone.
